Guerrilla Grannies tells the story of three guerrilla women that fought with the Women’s Liberation Army of FRELIMO and thus helped liberate the country from Portuguese colonialism and also paved the way to the emancipation of Mozambican women. Ike Bertels shows us three important moments Monica, Amelia and Mary’s lives, allowing a unique look on the development of these women, who seemed to be destined to work the land and have children.
These life stories, which take place in a country that reinvents itself, show how revolutionary ideals – in this case, equality between men and women and the possibility of access to education – can become real when people – women – are willing to fight for their lives.
